The
Mukunda Mala composed by
Shri Kulashekhara Azhwar
is a garland of verses on Lord Mukunda (Granter of Mukti). There seem to be several versions of this work,
and we have been able to find these four
(1) 53 shlokas in Mukunda-Mala-Stotra by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (Bhaktivedanta Book Trust)
(2) 40 shlokas in "Mukunda Mala" by S.L.N.Simha and V.S.Sampathkumaracharya (Dharma-Artha Center)
(3) 44 shlokas in a commentary by Mridananda (Ramakrishna Mission)
(4) 60 shlokas in Stava-Kalpa-Druma
by Bhaktisaranga Goswami and Purushottama Dasa (Gaudiya Grantha Mandira)
Even among these works, the verses are not in the same order, and even in the verses
which appear commonly, there are several variations in wordings. We are following the
version at prapatti.com and try to provide the other forms of these verses that are
found in (1).
We are going to consider the 40 shlokas which are found in all publications,
and one shloka (vande mukundam ..) which appears in some texts
Also, the authorship of this work is itself under question. The confusion seems to
stem from the fact that many "Kuleshekhara"s appear in the lineage of Cheras, and
it is unclear if Kulashekhara Azhwar is the author. This should not have relevance to
the appreciation of this work, though.
The exploration here is to get at the meanings of each of the
words, investigate roots and related words.
